Highlighted work:

Andrea Jones’s doctoral research is in the field of addictions and mental illness and is located in Downtown Eastside, Vancouver. She is also the founder of the UBC Chapter for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (www.ihiubc.com) which aims to engage students in learning about health care quality improvement and patient safety. As well, she has been involved with youth health education programs in BC and Nunavut.

Anita Palepu (Addictions Health)

Anita Palepu

Current Roles:
Internal Medicine specialist, St. Paul’s Hospital

Program Director for the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program, University of British Columbia

Researcher – Dr. Palepu is a researcher at the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences at St. Paul’s Hospital. Her research interests include: urban health, substance use, harm reduction, addiction treatment, social determinants of health such as housing and homelessness, and quality of life

Description:

Dr. Palepu engages in research related to substance use and addiction treatment among vulnerable groups. She has examined the substance use patterns among homeless participants of the Vancouver At Home Study and its relationship with residential stability.

Dr. Palepu’s other areas of interest are: Health and Underhousing, Access and Resources to Health care, and Health education and advocacy

Get involved – Dr. Palepu is interested in connecting with students, practitioners, and members of the community to provide mentorship, opportunities in advocacy work, research, academic conversations, idea generation, and knowledge translation. She invites all the relationships that may come from the Social Medicine Network and is excited to see what develops.

Highlighted work:

Dr. Wood’s clinical research focuses on inner city medicine issues as well as policies as they relate to treatment and prevention issues facing injection drug users, as well as public health and HIV prevention strategies for street-involved youth.

Michael Krausz (Addictions Medicine)

Michael Krausz

Current Roles:
Health Professional – Dr. Krausz has worked as a psychiatrist for over 30 years, and is heavily involved in trauma care and treatment.

Professor – Dr. Krauz is cross-appointed to the University’s Department of Psychiatry and School of Population and Public Health.

Researcher – Dr. Krausz is the University of British Columbia (UBC) Leading Edge Endowment Funds (LEEF) Chair for Addiction Research

Description:

Dr. Krausz’s research experience includes paradigm-shifting studies working with highly traumatized individuals – he was the lead for the German Heroin Trials in 2003, and is now the Co-Principal Investigator for the Study to Assess Longer-term Opioid Medication Effectiveness (SALOME) trial, which is currently ongoing in Vancouver. SALOME is a clinical trial that tests alternative treatments for people with chronic heroin addiction who are not benefitting sufficiently from current known treatments, and it also provides participants with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers and counselors to help them achieve stability in their life, seek employment, and find suitable housing.

Todd Sakakibara (Addictions Health)

Todd Sakakibara

Current roles:

Health Professional – Family Physician at Three Bridges Community Health Clinic and Raven Song Community Health Clinic – He provides care to vulnerable populations including those dealing with poverty, mental health, addictions, HIV, and the LGTB communities;

Researcher – He is involved in community based research for gay men’s health;

Clinical Assistant Professor – UBC Department of Family Practice, Site faculty for Curriculum St. Paul’s Hospital Family Practice Residency Program

Dr. Sakakibara’s other areas of interest are: Health education and advocacy, LGBTQ Health,  Maternal and Child health (Youth Health), HIV/AIDS, Cultural safety
